Weight and Electronics

I added up my pack and gear weight today and came up with about 15 pounds, including 1 liter of water. Electronics are embarrassingly heavy accounting for 2.86 pounds, and will be the subject of further scrutiny in the near future. Is a 7 inch android tablet, a 3gs iPhone, a Garmin handheld GPS (etrex 20), and an old iPod too much? Plus a small battery charger to recharge USB devices like the iPhone and tablet for emergency use.

The El Camino guide weighs in at 10 ounces, which seems high. All other reading will be done using the tablet and nook books or audio, as I have downloaded audio books from the public library. Audio books are nice for the longer slogs and at night.

Besides being used to read nook books, the tablet, a cheap but very nice Hisense 7 pro Android OS unit from Walmart ($130), will be an experimental navigation device. Since Google maps requires an internet connection, which will not be available most of the time enroute, I downloaded maps of Spain from Osmand which work with the Hisense GPS off line very well. The Hisense GPS works flawlessly, unlike the Google Nexus 7, which I bought and returned when its GPS could not be made to operate reliably. I am sold on the Hisense for travel: small, light and cheap it can be carried and lost without much trouble or expense.

I will try to provide a packing list in the near future.
