Judy and I set forth this AM in rain to climb the highest ascent of the El Camino on the Leon to Santiago section. We agreed that it would be prudent to give Prudence's feet another days rest, so she and Vivian, an acquaintance from Australia with ankle problems took a cab from the albergue to O'Cebreiro, about 7 km distant, where we were to meet them after our climb.
We waved at them as they passed us in their cab, and continued what turned out to be the ugliest hike we've had: muddy slop in soaking rain on the one section of trail we took (we hiked the road mostly except where we misguidedly took what seems like a cow path) and no views, anywhere. Sigh...and to think it was the highlight of our hike 9 years ago.
After a 2-3 hour hike we met them at the top, ordered a taxi to Sarria 40 km distant along the camino, and ate garlic soup and huevos con jamon (ham and eggs and potatoes) while we waited.
We are now in the fancy Alfonso IX hotel in Sarria, after having drinks with a nurse on her 4th day here recovering from blisters after embarking with ill-prepared "soft feet". A Dane with similar problems joined us. We left them commiserating and eating a dinner based on chicken. Prudence was not alone with foot problems.
Too dark for much photography, but here's arriving in O'Cebreiro.
